Early Modern Adaptations and Transformations of Aristotelian Natural Philosophy: Terminology, Key Concepts, and Case Studies

This special issue of Aristotelica edited by Simone Guidi and Enrico Pasini was published open access. The issue simultaneously integrates two aspects and historiographical perspectives. While investigating the development and reconceptualization of Aristotelian notions in early modern natural philosophy, it emphasizes the role of terminology and its historical shifts.
Without claiming completeness – but in the hope of fostering new research in this combined field of studies – it examines a number of relevant case studies from different moments of the Renaissance and early modern natural thought. Through these studies, it attempts to tentatively chart some of these overlaps in concepts and vocabulary, focusing particularly on the significant time period from the fourteenth to the seventeenth century.

This book is a detailed exploration of the Hispanic intellectual context and the different Aristotelian traditions that prevailed until the 16th century. Through a review and contextualization of Aristotelian thinkers and texts, it argues that a unique Aristotelian tradition was formed in New Spain.

The characteristic differences of Novohispanic Aristotelianism are a consequence of five factors: contact with the autochthonous cultures of America, the impact of the colonial organization, the influence of the Salamanca humanist tradition, the presence of the Italian Aristotelianism of Renaissance translators in the university curricula and in the intellectual polemics of the time, and a peculiar assimilation of primitive and Old Testament Christianity in relation to indigenous people. The book analyzes the works of Alonso de la Veracruz, Bartolomé de las Casas, Bernardino de Sahagún, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora, and Francisco Xavier Clavijero, reconsidering them in light of the history of ideas in New Spain and the contributions of Byzantine translators. It also offers a reflection on the problem of addressing Mexican colonial sources.

This volume will be of interest to undergraduate and postgraduate philosophy students, as well as researchers focused on Aristotle, Renaissance philosophy or Latin American studies.

Virginia Aspe Armella is a full-time researcher at the Faculty of Philosophy at Universidad Panamericana (Mexico City). She is the author of Approaches to the Theory of Freedom in Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (2018) and a member of the Academia Hispano Americana de Ciencias, Artes y Letras de México.

This volume investigates the historical, conceptual and lexical evolution of ontology in the context of German-speaking Protestant and Reformed scholasticism (Schulmetaphysik) in the years following the publication of the Elementa Philosophiae sive Ontosophia (1647) by the Calvinist Johannes Clauberg (1622-1665). The work, reissued in 1660 and 1664, is one of the most systematic treatises on ontology of the time.

This study, starting from the current framework of our knowledge of the first phase in the history of ontology – from the coining of the term in 1606 to the publication of the Elementa Philosophia sive Ontosophia in 1647 – aims to investigate the ‘second half’ of this history, i.e. the years following the reception and dissemination of Claubergian works in the context of Schulmetaphysik, and ranging roughly from the 1660s to the end of the century, without excluding the first decade of the 18th century, in which a number of significant events took place: Lange’s Dissertatio academica, focusing on the outcomes of ontology, and Ott’s Brevis Epitome Praeceptorum Scientiae Metaphysicae, the last work belonging to the Claubergian tradition, were published in 1708. Beyond this timespan, it is already possible to glimpse the context inspired by the new instances of the Frühaufklärung, with the role of Wolff, one of its most important exponents, intent on dialoguing with the late Schulmetaphysik.

René Descartes: The Complete Correspondence in English Translation is the first complete English translation of the extant correspondence of the polymath René Descartes, who excelled in all areas of philosophy, the sciences, and mathematics. The translation is based on the best available editions, modified by several other sources. It is accompanied by an editorial apparatus consisting of cross-references and brief biographies of the correspondents. Descartes’ correspondence elaborates his views, providing a crucial resource for students, teachers, and scholars in philosophy, history of philosophy, and history of science and mathematics.

Volume I presents correspondence from the period 1619 to 1638. The letters begin with exchanges between Descartes and the physico-mathematician Isaac Beeckman, the essayist Guez de Balzac, the lens maker Jean Ferrier, and Descartes’ future primary correspondent Marin Mersenne. It includes letters to high ranking Oratorians. One can also see the beginnings of Descartes’ relations with Constantijn Huygens, who will be Descartes’ other chief correspondent. One can also trace the developments of Descartes’ early unpublished works on metaphysics, physics, and human biology, together with his reaction to the condemnation of Galileo by the Catholic Church. The letters show developments in Descartes’ construction and publication of the Discourse on Method, together with the essays Dioptrics, Meteors, and Geometry. This results in an explosion of letters from and to various critics such as the professor of medicine Vopiscus Fortunatus Plemp, the astrologer Jean Baptiste Morin, the mathematicians Pierre Petit, Gilles Personne de Roberval, Pierre de Fermat, and many others.

This volume poses the question of why Christian Aristotelianism has been cancelled from the modern era in the historiography of philosophy. In six chapters on theoretical philosophy – centred around the main figures Suárez, Vázquez, Ruiz de Montoya, Arriaga and Izquierdo – the scandal is explained by the delay with which philosophical medieval studies discovered the 14th century for itself. Catholic innovations of the 16th century – the subject matter of the two chapters on practical philosophy – convey an idea of the extent of the ignorance that is an effect of the modern legend. In the age of the witch trials, the so-called Jesuit morality corroded the belief in torture, and the West owes sexual self-determination to the so-called Jesuit morality. Finally, it is argued that talk of a ‘philosophy of the modern age’ and its contrast to the ‘Middle Ages’ should be regarded merely as a relic of the Kulturkampf.

Franciscan friars were everywhere in the early modern Catholic world, a world that stretched from the Americas, through Western and Central Europe, to the Middle East and Asia. This global brotherhood was as deeply entangled in the great religious wars that convulsed Europe during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as it was in the Spanish and Portuguese empires. While the political and imperial theories of Dominicans like Francisco de Vitoria and Bartolome de Las Casas, who took the theology of Thomas Aquinas as their starting point, are well-known, this has not been the case for Franciscan thinking until now.

The Franciscans and their allies built a body of political writings around the theology of John Duns Scotus (1265/6–1308), and this book presents a wide selection of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Scotist writings on politics, warfare, and empire in English for the first time. Beginning with Scotus’s own doctrine on the forced baptism of Jews, this collection translates John Mair (1467–1550) on European imperialism and holy war, Alfonso de Castro (1495–1558) on the Schmalkaldic War of the 1540s, Juan Focher (1497–1572) on the war against the Chichimeca Indians of Mexico, and John Punch on the British and Irish Civil Wars of the 1640s and 1650s.

Ian Campbell is Reader in Early Modern Irish History at Queen’s University Belfast, UK. He is the author of Renaissance Humanism and Ethnicity before Race: The Irish and the English in the Seventeenth Century (2013), and has edited, with Floris Verhaart, Protestant Politics Beyond Calvin: Reformed Theologians on War in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries (2022).

Todd Rester is Associate Professor of Church History at Westminster Theological Seminary, US. He has edited, with Stephen M. Coleman, Faith in the Time of Plague (2021), a collection of Protestant and Reformed writings on epidemics. He has translated many early modern Reformed theological works, including (with Andrew McGinnis) Franciscus Junius’s Mosaic Polity (2015), and (with Joel R. Beeke) Petrus van Mastrich’s Theoretical-Practical Theology (5 vols, 2018–2025).

This volume is edited by Nicola Polloni and Sylvain Roudaut. It focuses on late medieval and early modern philosophy and medicine, and explores the replacement of hylomorphism—the dominant theory of bodies in the Middle Ages—with new theories of matter such as corpuscularianism and atomism at the dawn of the Modern period.

Together, the contributions offer a comprehensive overview of a crucial historical moment for the history of philosophy and science: the rise of a new conception of matter against declining scholastic theories. They highlight the key aspects of this historical transition by investigating precise concepts that were central to this shift, namely the notions of elements, atoms, and corpuscles. Shedding light on the gradual process by which hylomorphism was eventually replaced by a more positive conception of matter and natural processes, the book demonstrates how many thinkers of the late medieval period were willing to integrate new theories into the conceptual framework of Aristotelian natural philosophy, and tried to harmonise them with the traditional concepts and axioms of scholastic doctrines.

Showing how these conceptual innovations resulted from a complex interaction between different fields of late medieval and early modern knowledge, the authors bring together research from the disciplines of metaphysics, medieval philosophy, and medical science. Nicola Polloni is an Associate Professor of Medieval Philosophy at the University of Messina, in Italy. His research delves into medieval hylomorphism, focusing on the tensions arising from the intertwining of metaphysics and natural philosophy.

Sylvain Roudaut is a Research Fellow at KU Leuven in Belgium. His research focuses on the interaction between metaphysics, natural philosophy, and mathematics in the Middle Ages.

Since its inception, the activities of the Society of Jesus reached the whole globe through the collective effort of its members. Indeed, the successes obtained by various Jesuit missions in every continent of the planet were often the result of the concerted dedication of its priests and brothers. However, from time to time, internal relations were marked by deep disagreements between missionaries, strong emotions born out of political disputes, philosophical differences, economic conflicts, and personal feuds. Conflicting perspectives on shared issues, lack of resources, personal agendas, and political differences regularly pitted Jesuit against Jesuit, priest against priest, brother against brother, and even provinces against provinces. Beyond internal issues, the clashes over control of missionary spaces between the order and mendicants in Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas exemplified how large-scale conflict could determine the success or the failure of the missions. Furthermore, recent studies on anti-Jesuit literature have shed light on the political quarrels between members of the Society of Jesus and various administrators and scholars, both secular and religious, and their struggle with unsupportive monarchs and other elites. In order to further explore the nearly five centuries of disputes, differences, and resolution of conflicts between Jesuits themselves, as well as between Jesuits and other historical actors, this conference plans to gather scholars from all over the world to present and debate in person their approach to Jesuitical conflicts. The aim is to deepen our understanding of how members of the Society of Jesus dealt with, overcame, or succumbed to local and widespread adversities, whether internal or external, thus illustrating how the religious order was far from a monolithic institution.

Keynote speakers include:

Liam Matthew Brockey (Michigan State University), Yasmin Haskell (Monash University, Melbourne), Aliocha Maldavsky (Université Paris Nanterre), and Robert Aleksander Maryks (Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu).

  • Anti-Jesuit literature and Jesuit responses;
  • Disputes with other missionary orders;
  • Persecutions against or by Jesuits;
  • Disputes with secular authorities;
  • Troubles with the Papacy, congregations, or dicasteries;
  • Personal and institutional struggles for economic resources;
  • Historical framing of past conflicts involving Jesuits;
  • Family feuds and their ties to missionary work;
  • Conflict resolution;
  • Disputes with Jews, Muslims, or other non-Christians;
  • Interventions by the Jesuit curia in local disputes;
  • Different interpretations and philosophical controversies;
  • Jesuits during periods of war;
  • Physical violence and strong emotions in Jesuit literature.
