This volume is an homage to the great intellectual contribution made by Loris Sturlese to the field of history of medieval philosophy. Its point of departure lies in a methodological line, which Sturlese has maintained throughout his whole academic career: the importance in the historical and conceptual reconstruction of medieval philosophical thought of focusing not only on the classical, most famous centers of knowledge production and transmission, but also on the often-neglected peripheries, which during the Middle Ages were increasingly more relevant in propelling the circulation of texts and ideas. In this volume, the notions of ‘center’ and ‘periphery’ are not understood in a merely geographical sense, but also in conceptual, linguistic, historical and literary terms. The richness of this approach is demonstrated by the broad spectrum of the contributions, which range from Islamic philosophy to Italian Renaissance, including the reception of ancient philosophy and of Arabic scientific works in the Latin world, and up to eighteenth-century French geography. Special attention is devoted to the philosophical thought developed in the German area. The volume does not lack in giving space to important medieval figures, such as Dante, as well as to more general philosophical notions, such as the concept of rationality. The volume explores connections, ruptures, relations and affinities through the analysis of paradigmatic figures, places and topics within the micro- and macro-histories of philosophy.

In the Catholic Church’s tradition and canon law, canonizations represent the final step of trials aiming to verify the heroicity of virtues and/or the martyrdom of those who died in the odor of sanctity. At the same time, canonizations also confirm specific hagiographical models, namely models of Christian perfection or holiness, as imitable behavioral examples.

Such models range from virgins to missionaries and martyrs, confessors, and — especially in the 1900s — good mothers and physicians, to name but a few. They not only convey precise messages to devotees but are rooted in theology and culture, reflecting the identity traits and values of the canonizations’ postulators — especially when backed by religious orders — as well as the cultural features of the societies that fostered these devotions.

This online conference thus aims to bring together the authors of papers related to the promotion of causes for canonization and hagiographical models, which were developed globally from the 1500s to the 1900s, paying particular attention to the role of theology and culture in shaping hagiographical models.

We welcome papers on topics including but not limited to:

The theological legitimization of doctrinal and moral positions through canonization

The legitimization of early modern religious orders through the canonization of their founders, such as in the 1622 canonizations

Martyrdom and suffering, including in missions ad gentes and ad intra

Self-sacrifice, including cases of atonement and stigmata

Case studies of both successful and unsuccessful models of sanctity

The conference will be held online from December 15 through 17, 2021, and is organized by Elisa Frei (Università di Macerata and Boston College) and Eleonora Rai (KU Leuven).

At the school of the Scholastics: rereading the theories of arts and letters in the early modern age

This collective project developed at the University of Louvain (GEMCA – Group for Early Modern Cultural Analysis) conjugates three disciplines: art history, French literature, and neo-Latin literature. It aims to draw all the consequences, in the fields of the history of letters and the arts, from a matter of fact confirmed by historians of philosophy over several decades: the permanence and even the omnipresence of Scholasticism (traditionally associated with medieval culture) as the basis of philosophical-theological training in all universities in Europe in modern times. This massive intellectual background likely exerted a more or less marked influence on the other fields of knowledge and the arts. But these interactions still remain largely unexplored.

The project focuses on a matter that is well known to GEMCA’s research staff, i.e. works on arts and literature written in the 16th and 17th centuries, in France and Italy. The aim is to shed new light on these treatises, by studying the way in which the scholastic culture of their authors could influence their writing both in terms of substance (questions and debates which echo contemporary scholastic literature) and form (use of concepts, terms connoted or whose definition is enriched as soon as their scholastic use is taken into account).

The project started on October 1, 2017, and will run for five years. It is led by a group of three promoters assisted by three doctoral students, it also provides for the hiring of a post-doctoral researcher. It will be punctuated by multiple scientific activities (in particular an intensive seminar, two international conferences, a summer school, and numerous invitations from foreign researchers) and will give rise to numerous publications (theses, articles, collective volumes) (See publications) as well as putting an interactive database online. The activities will fit into the program of the GEMCA research center, whose Schol’Art project overlaps with certain major scientific concerns and is of interest to the work of many members.

This volume, mostly in Italian, deals with crucial moments in the philosophical debate on dreams, from antiquity and late antiquity to the modern age. Starting from a historical-critical overview by Tullio Gregory, this book addresses, with the interventions of Francesco Fronterotta and Francesca Alesse, the thought of Plato and Aristotle, treated here along two main axes of the ancient tradition. To the latter are added, by the papers of Francesca Calabi and Domenico Devoti, the fundamental phases of elaboration by Philo of Alexandria and by the Jewish and New Testament tradition. From the side of the revival of Neoplatonic and theurgic themes moves the contribution of Luciano Albanese on Julian the Theurgist, followed by the essay by Gaetano Lettieri on Agostino as a decisive author for the redefinition of the notion of dream. Such a complex and rich picture reflects in Renaissance and early modernity, which is addressed by Claudio Buccolini and, as regards the Cartesian lexicon, in Giulia Belgioioso’s paper. The text by Anna Lisa Schino deals with the theme of prophetic dreams from La Mothe Le Vayer and Hobbes, while Daniel Garber’s contribution is dedicated to the author of Leviathan and the relationship between dreams and the politics of the imagination. In turn, Pina Totaro investigates the contexts of the conception of dreams and knowledge in Spinoza, while the essay by Isabelle Olivo-Pendron and Gilles Olivo considers, in a modernity which goes from Montaigne to Rousseau, not the dream but rather the reverie.
