Life

A native of Lisbon born around 1583, little is known regarding the life of this Augustinian friar, who served in the mission of the Congregação da Índia Oriental dos Eremitas Agostinhos (Congregation of the East Indies of the Augustinian Hermits) and was regarded as one of the most talented authors and scholars in the history of the congregation. Regarding his family origins, only the names of his parents are recorded: Balthasar Ferreira and Anna Pessoa. He professed his vows on October 2, 1601, and in the following year, departed for the Estado da Índia as part of the fourteenth Augustinian mission, alongside Master Fr. João da Rocha, Fr. Sebastião Ribeiro, Fr. Hilário de Jesus, Fr. Felipe de Paixão, and Fr. Antonio de Santo Estevão. In Goa, he continued his studies at the Colégio de Nossa Senhora do Pópulo (College of Our Lady of the People) and was ordained as a priest, preacher, and confessor. A disciple of Fr. Domingo da Piedade, he attained the rank of master in philosophy and theology. He subsequently became a professor of both disciplines at the same college, serving as a lecturer (lente) in theology in the years 1616 and 1621.

Domingos do Espírito Santo also served as the secretary of the congregation (elected on December 5, 1616), vice-rector of the Colégio do Pópulo, and rector on two occasions—the first from November 16, 1618, to February 1, 1621, and the second from September 3, 1624, to November 20, 1626. In his capacity as a visitor of the Order (appointed on January 30, 1621), he inspected all the houses of the Northern Province, accompanied by the vice-provincial Fr. Antônio da Graça. He was elected definidor (definer) on May 27, 1624, a position he would have held for a second time in 1628 had he not died prior to his inauguration. The chronicles provide no specific information regarding the exact date of his death, which is believed to have occurred in October 1628 at the age of 45. However, a chronological inconsistency is noted, as records suggest he was elected definidor two months after this purported date of death. Despite this lapse, there is no significant disagreement among chroniclers concerning the year of his passing.

Versed in moral theology and the history of the Order of the Hermits of Saint Augustine, some of his works were published during his lifetime, while others remained in manuscript form. According to Teófilo Aparício Lopez (1978), the Manual Eremítico (Eremitic Manual) was his most celebrated work and was frequently cited by Augustinian chroniclers, most notably Fr. Manuel da Ave Maria, who transcribed the title in his own chronicle. Unfortunately, it has not been possible to verify this information, as the source has yet to be located. A similar misfortune befell the Historia da fundação do Convento de S. Monica de Goa (History of the Foundation of the Convent of St. Monica of Goa), a manuscript reportedly partially transcribed by the Discalced Augustinian Fr. Agostinho de S. Maria and published in 1699. Another chronicle authored by Fr. Domingos do Espírito Santo was the Chronica da Religiaõ de Santo Agostinho (Chronicle of the Religion of Saint Augustine), which was said to comprise four books.

Beyond historical chronicles, Domingos do Espírito Santo authored commentaries on the rules of his order. The single copy of the two-volume manuscript Exposição sobre as Constituições da Ordem de S. Agostinho (Exposition on the Constitutions of the Order of St. Augustine) was lost during its transport to Portugal. Fr. Domingos da Encarnação, the provincial of the Congregação da Índia Oriental responsible for bringing the work to press, died in Bahia in 1714. According to Fr. Manuel da Purificação (1958, 66), this work was a “exposição doutíssima das constituiçoens da Ordem, com varias doutrinas sobre o governo da Congregaçam da índia” (most learned exposition of the constitutions of the Order, containing various doctrines on the government of the Congregation of India). Despite this loss, a volume authored by Fr. Domingos do Espírito Santo was located in the Reserved Manuscripts section of the Arquivo Nacional da Torre do Tombo (National Archive of the Torre do Tombo), the title of which closely resembles the aforementioned two volumes: Anotações às constituições da Ordem dos Eremitas de Nosso Padre Santo Agostinho (Annotations to the Constitutions of the Order of the Hermits of Our Father Saint Augustine). This work, written in Portuguese with Latin passages, provides elucidative commentary on the determinations contained in several chapters of the constitutions. However, the absence of the first manuscript precludes a comparative analysis between the two documents. This gap, compounded by the difference in the number of volumes, prevents a conclusive verification of their relationship, making it impossible to determine whether they represent the same text, a preparatory draft, or a reproduction.

Of the other works located in Portuguese archival institutions, the following are listed in alphabetical order, as their specific dates of composition are unknown.

  • The Manual dos Ministros Ecclesiasticos, prinçipalmente Religiosos que se ocupam nas cristandades Orientais (Manual for Ecclesiastical Ministers, primarily Religious who occupy themselves in Oriental Christendoms), according to Carlos A. Moreira Azevedo (2011, 360), was printed by the Provincial Vicar of India, Fr. Luiz Coutinho. Located only in its manuscript version, it is a treatise that complements and deepens the subjects addressed in the manuscript Privilegios dos Missionarios (Privileges of Missionaries), shedding light on specific cases in Portuguese Asia and its fortresses. It offers resolutions concerning parish priests and confessors and their relationship with captains, royal ministers, and both long-standing and newly converted Christians.
  • The Manual de vizitadores (Manual for Visitors), Where the author demonstrates his command of moral theology and canon law by discussing—in Portuguese and Latin—the qualifications of those appointed to conduct visitations of the congregation’s convents and houses. He details the proper procedures for these visits and the interactions with priors and other religious, providing instructions on how to conduct accusations, fraternal corrections, inquiries, defenses, and punishments.
  • The Tratado do estado e isenção das pessoas religiosas a que na Ordem dos Eremitas do Nosso Padre Santo Augusto chamam mantelatas (Treatise on the state and exemption of religious persons who in the Order of the Hermits of Our Father Saint Augustine are called mantelatas) arose from the author’s perceived need to address this group of women—also referred to as beatas—who dedicated themselves to religious life in their own homes. These women did not enter a convent or take solemn vows, but instead took the three simple vows and lived under the authority of the Order’s prelates. As Fr. Domingos do Espírito Santo noted in the prologue, few writings existed to determine the status of these women within the Order and the Estado da Índia. Consequently, drawing upon authors who had treated the subject, the friar discussed the nature of the mantelatas, compiled various guidelines, and resolved existing doubts.
  • Also, the Breve relaçam das christandades que os religiosos de N. Padre Sancto Agostinho tem a sua conta nas partes do Oriente, & do fruyto que nellas faz (Brief account of the Christendoms that the religious of Our Father Saint Augustine have under their care in the parts of the Orient, and of the fruit they produce therein), which was published by Antonio Alvarez in Lisbon in 1630. Although it does not indicate an author, archival data from both the Arquivo Nacional da Torre do Tombo and the Biblioteca da Ajuda (Ajuda Library) attribute the work to Fr. Domingos do Espírito Santo. This attribution is confirmed by Carlos Azevedo (2011, 360), who states the work was published posthumously and anonymously. In it, the author describes the missionary efforts of the Augustinians in the regions of China, Malacca, Bengal, Ceylon, Sindh, Melinde, Mombasa, Arabia, Basra, and Persia. Furthermore, the volume contains letters from Augustinian religious and an account of the death of the converted Queen Gativanda Dedopoli in Shiraz, Persia, during the reign of Shah Abbas in September 1624.

Finally, other manuscripts by Fr. Domingos do Espírito Santo are listed in chronicles or reference works but have not been located, and no information remains beyond their titles. These are: Erros dos Armenios impugnados (Errors of the Armenians Impugned), Privilegios dos Missionarios (Privileges of Missionaries), Tratado de Contractos, em que se achão varias resoluções dos Contratos de toda a India (Treatise on Contracts, in which various resolutions of the Contracts of all India are found), and Dubia Regularia (Regular Doubts).
